Sony’s Playstation 2 has been the most successful games console of all time. It altered the perception of video games and integrated itself worldwide as a multimedia entertainment system in the living room.
Only a varied and innovative game selection can showcase the true potential of the new console. That’s why many games had their own area at the Sony Playstation booth at the Gamescom 2015. A banner attached to the ceiling that went all around the Playstation booth separated it from the rest of the convention and also served to unite the different game areas inside the booth. The massive banner had the Playstation brand design and served to show different game worlds inside a common space representing the Playstation symbolically.
Walbert-Schmitz had to design and implement different play areas for the diverse games available. This areas had to represent the three-dimensional worlds that one can experience in the games and served as an analogous backdrop to the virtual world. Different areas were created, like the “Guitar Hero” area with the rough brick walls, or the gloomy wooden hut of “Until Dawn”, or the landscape that appeared to come out of the game “Tearaway Unfolded”. The appearance of the areas of Destiny, Uncharted 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Star Wars: Battlefront, Disney Infinity 3.0, No Man’s Sky and Horizon Zero Dawn were all customized to correspond the different game worlds and design.
The technical presentation played a big role at the world’s largest event for computer and video games. In addition to countless gaming stations where visitors could play the games, there were big screens, animated light shows, illuminated panels, black light graffiti and four fully air-conditioned theaters with a capacity for 276 visitors.
