The foundation for the project was laid back in 2005. At a time before the first iPhone was even released. This shows how innovative the idea behind the app was in its inception.
A medically verified reliable eyesight check, before, during and after a treatment, without ever having to go to the doctor and avoiding long waiting times, that is innovation. This check already exists but the app is still considered innovative in this quality. The attendees of the guest presentation by Felix Simonsen (WS-Digital Solution on the right in the photo) at the anniversary colloquium of ACTO e.V., were able to get an idea of what makes this application stand out.
Felix Simonsen and the optician Thomas Heiliger from Aachen presented the great potential and the future viability of the application to the audience, which consisted of representatives of hospitals, the RWTH Aachen, the pharmaceutical industry, health insurance companies, doctors and researchers from the medical field, as well as prominent guests from politics and education.
In a joint project Felix Simonsen from Walbert-Schmitz, Prof. Dr. med. Norbert Schrage, ACTO e.V., the University Hospital of Aachen, and Novartis, developed digital, pioneering medical work.
The name “Visus TAS” comes from the system the app uses, which is a system specially developed for the app, the Total Analytical System (TAS). It is designed to allow patients to independently check their eyesight. Special attention was therefore given to the development of an interactive, user friendly, intuitive interface.
To ensure medical value, the system has undergone extensive statistical verification and medical validation. In addition, patients of ophthalmological practices, opticians and the University Hospital of Aachen used the system and the application in tests. Through these rigorous tests, a medical verification of the results and test procedures was achieved. Some of the test procedures involved completely new concepts. The different modules of the test are suitable for checking the visual acuity in the near and far, the visual field and color vision. The eyesight test is available for various devices. The app runs on Apple iPads, Android tablets like the Nexus 10, Windows PCs and Mac computers with OSX.
